He began work with Abrahamse & Co. in 1986 as general superintendent of the Willow Lake Development in Charlottesville, Va. Since that time he has continued as a Project Manager to complete many successful projects, including the Thomas Jefferson Parkway, a handicap accessible path to Monticello through steep wooded terrain. With his integrated knowledge of construction methods and creative approach to problem solving, Gerry designed three tools to facilitate building the curved walkway and railings of the Parkway. Due to the complexity and success of this project, Abrahamse & Co. were invited to work on another very challenging curved walkway on the Washington & Lee
University campus, a project also directed by Gerry, who thinks of himself less as a manager and more as a “greaser” (a term he learned from his grandfather who had a career in heavy mining equipment ). In Gerry’s words, “I just keep things moving”.
Placing a high value on the team spirit at Abrahamse & Co, Gerry comments that “each project manager has certain strengths, and we often consult with and support one another, yet we don’t compete. Knowing we are all in supporting roles, we share the loads, and achieve our success as a company”.
In addition to a construction career, Gerry has taught yoga
for over 30 years, written three books of poetry, enjoys backpacking in the
High Sierras, windsurfing, listening to live music, and playing with his grandson.
His four children are nearly all grown and finding their own success and direction.
